The Anniversary Push

Gong Cha, the Taiwan-founded bubble tea chain operating nearly 2,200 locations across 32 international markets, is running a month-long anniversary activation tied to its 20th year in business — deploying a limited-edition merchandise drop, a daypart-driving drink LTO, and a consumer sweepstakes to generate traffic across participating U.S. units.

The campaign's centerpiece is a Birthday Boba Bottle, produced in limited quantities with no restock planned after the anniversary window closes. On Sept. 15, guests who purchase the Birthday Drink — a mango-foam-over-Strawberry-Milk-Tea build, available Sept. 6 through Sept. 15 — receive the bottle free while supplies last. After the giveaway window, the bottle retails for $4.99 with any purchase. Collectable merchandise programs like this have become a reliable traffic lever in the specialty beverage segment, with chains using scarcity mechanics to compress visit frequency into a defined promotional window.

The Sweepstakes Layer

Gong Cha layered a sweepstakes on top of the merchandise drop targeting consumers who share a 2006 birth year with the brand. Three winners, selected at random and announced Sept. 14, each receive a private store buyout for up to 20 guests, complimentary drinks for the group, birthday merchandise, and a year of free Gong Cha. Store-takeover promotions carry a dual utility for franchisees: they generate social content organically and introduce the brand to a new guest cohort at operator cost, not the franchisee's.

"From our exclusive Birthday Drink to the new Birthday Boba Bottle to parties celebrating our birthday twins, we have a lot of fun in store for this major milestone," said Jenn Leitner, Vice President, Brand & Marketing, The Americas for Gong Cha.

Segment Context

The activation arrives as the U.S. bubble tea segment continues to attract franchise capital, with Gong Cha among a handful of global players — alongside Kung Fu Tea, Tiger Sugar, and Tpumps — competing for share in a category that has expanded well beyond coastal metro clusters into secondary and tertiary markets. Gong Cha's scalable, customizable beverage model — guests specify tea base, sweetness level, ice level, and toppings — positions it as a differentiated alternative to mainstream QSR beverage dayparts.

The chain's mobile app, available on iOS and Android, supports order-ahead and loyalty point accumulation, two features that have become table stakes for multi-unit specialty beverage operators pursuing off-premise volume and repeat visit data. Anniversary campaigns that funnel consumers into app downloads or loyalty enrollment convert short-term promotional traffic into longer-term CRM assets — a calculus increasingly central to how franchise systems justify the marketing spend to their franchisee base.

The broader anniversary year has also included purple and green co-branded tumblers and an exclusive boba charm, suggesting a merchandise-as-marketing strategy that runs parallel to, rather than dependent on, beverage sales alone. For operators in the bubble tea and specialty tea segment, that approach mirrors what coffee chains demonstrated years ago: branded drinkware carries margin and brand impressions simultaneously.
