The Program
Oceania Cruises will operate the cruise industry's first entirely gluten-free ocean voyage, a 12-night roundtrip sailing departing Southampton on May 31, 2028 aboard Oceania Vista. Every onboard dining venue — from signature specialty restaurants to casual outlets and in-suite delivery — will operate under a fully gluten-free culinary program, eliminating the cross-contact risk management that typically defines dietary-restricted travel.
The itinerary visits the British Isles, with port calls at Cork (Cobh), Dublin (Dún Laoghaire), Glasgow (Greenock), Stornoway in the Hebrides and Edinburgh (Newhaven). The voyage is being developed in collaboration with Celiac Cruise, a specialist gluten-free travel operator founded in 2018, which will serve as an official booking partner and provide operational expertise on safe-kitchen protocols.
What Changes Onboard
The scope of the conversion is broad by any foodservice standard. Specialty restaurants Toscana, Polo Grill, Red Ginger and Jacques will each reformat their menus entirely. Casual venues including Aquamar Kitchen and Waves Grill will follow suit. Afternoon tea service, freshly baked pastries from The Bakery, and the full in-suite dining program are all included — a degree of culinary coverage that goes well beyond the modified menu accommodations most cruise lines and hotel foodservice operations currently offer gluten-free guests.
For operators watching from the broader hospitality and contract-foodservice sector, the model is instructive. Executing a ship-wide dietary conversion requires kitchen segregation, dedicated prep surfaces, supplier-level ingredient verification and front-of-house staff fluency in cross-contact protocols — a set of operational disciplines increasingly relevant as celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity affect an estimated 1 in 100 people globally, with diagnosed rates rising across key travel demographics.
Industry Context
Oceania's move arrives as the premium and luxury foodservice segment faces growing pressure to move beyond token dietary accommodation. The free-from category has been one of the most consistent growth vectors in retail food for more than a decade, and that consumer expectation is migrating into away-from-home channels, including cruise, hotel banquet and contract dining. Celiac Cruise has previously partnered with Royal Caribbean and AmaWaterways on dedicated gluten-free sailings, but those programs operated at the voyage level without the full-ship culinary conversion Oceania is now committing to.
Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer of Oceania Cruises, framed the sailing as a culinary challenge as much as a hospitality one, describing it as an opportunity for the line's culinary team to demonstrate that an entirely gluten-free experience can deliver the same variety and creativity guests expect from the brand. Maureen Basye, founder of Celiac Cruise, noted that the program fundamentally changes what travel feels like for guests who normally must structure every meal around dietary risk management.
The voyage is bookable through travel advisors, directly with Oceania Cruises, or through Celiac Cruise. For foodservice and hospitality procurement teams tracking allergen-management trends, the Oceania–Celiac Cruise partnership structure — specialist operator as both development consultant and distribution channel — offers a replicable framework for dietary-specific program development across hotel, resort and contract dining contexts. Oceania Cruises is a wholly owned subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NYSE: NCLH).
